Russian Culture – from Ivan the Terrible to Putin the Poser

READERS:

This is a site for Russophiles and Russophobes where you can contribute your comments on the culture, history and politics of this great country on the pages at the top of this blog.

Russia stretches from Western Europe, through the Middle East to the Far East.

‘When the sunsets in St Petersburg it is rising in Vladivostock.’

I know I’ve been to both of them, but I don’t profess to know it all. I want to learn from you.

Here, both ‘Old Boys’ and ‘New Hands’ can learn and share their interest in this great country. Inputs from Russians are welcome to extend and correct knowledge.

ADD COMMENTS UNDER THE PAGE HEADINGS IN THE REPLY BOX EITHER TO INTRODUCE A NEW TOPIC OR ADD TO A PREVIOUS TOPIC. USE THE SEARCH ENGINE TO SEE IF A TOPIC HAS ALREADY BEEN DISCUSSED.

PREMISE:

Unlike Western Europe, whose history, religion and culture are based on Roman conquest, Latin, and the church of Rome, Russia is based on the Mongol conquest, Greek (Cyrillic) and the Russian Orthodox Church (from Byzantium) whose bible and services were always in the language of the people.

These different historical roots and geography result in a people of a similar, but different, culture to the West, which, in my opinion, partially explains why we find Russia mysterious.

WHAT DO YOU THINK? Please add you thoughts on the pages listed at the top of this blog.
